Axial Decompression Therapy

At Lake Marion Chiropractic, we provide axial decompression therapy. The axial decompression therapy machine has settings and set ups for both the neck (cervical spine) and low back (lumbar spine). Axial decompression therapy may be utilized in cases where patients present with low back/leg pain or neck/arm pain. These symptoms can be caused by mechanical pathologies such as prolapsed discs, disc disease, and inflammation from joint irritation. These mechanical discogenic disorders usually occur when the disc has become weakened by a combination of improper force distribution, poor nutrient exchange or poor blood flow. When the disc becomes weakened, the inside of the disc can begin to be pushed outward, usually to the back of the disc. Mechanical decompression works by decreasing the pressure inside the disc, which promotes the inward movement of the inner disc material. This in turn reduces the amount of pressure that the disc is able to put on structures, such as nerves. In addition, the “pumping” action that is a result of decompression therapy promotes proper nutrient exchange and blood flow, which improves the overall healing of the disc. The doctors at Lake Marion Chiropractic are trained to properly determine which patients will experience benefit from this therapy and in turn setting up a comprehensive treatment plan that is tailored to your specific condition.
