Getting Help for Insomnia

The inability to sleep fundamentally disrupts the body at multiple levels. The most obvious involves the inability to recover and regain one’s energy for another day. Instead, due to the inability to relax and repair, the body runs ragged. We feel this with exhaustion, foggy thinking, headaches, inattention, inability to focus, and poor ability to get along with others. While artificial chemicals such as caffeine or pharmaceuticals might be used to help, the effects might be only temporary. We at Lake Marion Chiropractic Center, serving Lakeville, MN, and St. Paul, MN, are here to help.

Insomnia Versus a Bad Night

In a bad night situation, the loss of sleep is temporary. The usual culprits tend to be anxiety and worry, or nervousness. They tend to elevate the heart rate, which may make it difficult to relax enough to shut down and go to sleep. However, once the body does relax and the rate drops, then sleep can kicks in.

Insomnia, however, involves the body’s inability to sleep. For a variety of reasons, the body doesn’t release the chemical signals to relax and go into unconscious mode. Instead, the brain continues to keep working, aware of what’s going on and unable to turn off. Night after night, insomnia ends up both exhausting a person as well as taking a toll on the person’s health. Chronic health problems may begin to happen.

A Chiropractor’s Approach to Insomnia

Chiropractic care may be able to address some of the factors that contribute to insomnia. Chronic stress is one of those factors, which emanates physically in locked up muscles, tension, headaches, pain, and anxiety, all of which might disrupt the ability to sleep. Massage therapy, for example, can a very powerful approach towards loosening muscles tightened from stress and poor posture habits. Spinal decompression is another approach, taking the effect of gravity off the spine which may help allow circulation to flow again. Can help provide relief for back pain due to compressed discs. Chiropractic adjustments can help with locked up neck pain or back muscles and help provide a targeted relief.
